The most effective and long-lasting student strike in U.S. History took place at San Francisco State College in 1968. The first Black Student Union, the first Black Studies Department, the only College of Ethnic Studies, and the admission of thousands of students of color resulted from this four-and-a-half-month strike which shut down 80% of the campus. It has been called the movement which “changed academia forever.”
Join Kitty Kelly Epstein and Bernard Stringer, co-authors of Changing Academia Forever: Black Student Leaders Analyze the Movement They Led (Myers Education Press, 2020), in a virtual Meet the Authors program to learn about the historic strike and its insights for today’s mass movements.

American Educational Research Association in Chicago in April 2015
Kitty and several other educators discuss the movement against corporatization at American Educational Research Association in Chicago in April 2015
Sat, April 18, 6:30 to 8:00pm, Swissotel, Event Centre Second Level, Vevey 3
Abstract
The panel looks within and across four cities (Philadelphia; Oakland, CA; Camden, NJ; Newark, NJ) where new forms of coalitions are challenging the corporatization agenda in education. We will examine how these new coalitions have formed, what they look like, their strategies, and how they negotiate across organizational and constituent boundaries. Second, we will examine how traditional organizations (e.g. unions) deal with rapidly changing environments. What opportunities and challenges do these organizations and coalitions face, what kinds of new possibilities do and might they create, and what kinds of capacities are they developing? Based on these case studies, we will draw lessons about effective organizing to preserve and strengthen public education in the U.S.
Kitty and other educators will utilize insights from their new book to discuss “Diversifying the Teaching Workforce (2014) on Monday, April 20, 2015 from 8:15-10:15 at the American Educational Research Association (AERA) (Marriott)Hotel) Chicago.
